HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- The talk came unceasingly, and in waves, like the turquoise waters of South Florida lapping up against the sand. It started three weeks ago at Martinsville, when he challenged Carl Edwards and warned that the points leader wouldn't sleep much the rest of the way. It continued into Texas, when he proclaimed to be in control of this championship race despite still playing from behind. And it peaked this past Thursday in Miami Beach, when he unleashed a torrent of smack talk that attempted to drive home the somewhat-crafted message that he had nothing to lose.
But the largest, loudest statement Tony Stewart made in the final stages of this astounding Chase was a three-word phrase he uttered with one lap remaining Sunday night at Homestead-Miami Speedway. "I got this," he said.

AVONDALE, Ariz. -- It was here at Phoenix International Raceway last season where Jimmie Johnson somehow saved his run of championships, stretching a fuel run to the finish and keeping close enough to Denny Hamlin that he could overtake him in the finale the next week. The five-time champion needed an ever bigger miracle Sunday, as his unprecedented streak of five consecutive titles neared its last gasp.
He didn't get it. Johnson finished a mediocre 14th on what had traditionally been one of his better tracks, and fell 68 points behind leader Carl Edwards with only next week's season-ender at Homestead-Miami Speedway remaining. In the process, he was eliminated from contention for this year's championship, and the most dominant run the sport has ever seen came to a somewhat unceremonious end.

AVONDALE, Ariz. -- As a one-year loaner who knew he already had a ride with Hendrick Motorsports in 2012, Kasey Kahne could have ridden out the string.
Crew chief Kenny Francis will join him in the No. 5 shop next season, but he chose to build a brand-new car for Phoenix.

Joe Gibbs Racing Motocross announced it has officially re-signed Davi Millsaps to the JGR/Toyota/Yamaha team for the 2012 Supercross and Motocross (450cc) season. Millsaps will join newly signed James Stewart, completing the 2012 team.
Coy Gibbs, President of the Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX Team, said, "Davi is really talented but has been saddled with injuries the past couple of years. I think this is going to be a really good year for him."
"[Davi&91; was riding really well until his knee injury at Red Bud where he led half the first moto," said team manager Jeremy Albrecht. "He is fully recovered from the subsequent surgery and I feel is as prepared as he has ever been stating a new season."
Millsaps joined the JGR team in 2010 after a lengthy stay at Team Honda.

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Tony Stewart backed up his smack talk with a convincing victory in Sunday's AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, the eighth race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
With his fourth victory in the Chase and the 43rd of his career, Stewart put a dent in runner-up Carl Edwards' series lead, scoring maximum points (48) to trim Edwards' advantage from eight to three points with two races left in the season.

Is it down to a two-man race now in the Chase for the Sprint Cup? If it is -- or even if it isn't -- can Brian Vickers manage to stay out of their way, and everyone else's?
Those were the burning questions lingering after Tony Stewart's rousing win Sunday in the wild and wooly Tums 500 at Martinsville Speedway.

The 29th running of the Bercy Supercross in Paris, France, came down to the final night of racing to determine who would be this year's King of Bercy. It basically came down to a two-rider showdown between Americans Eli Tomac and Kyle Chisholm who were tied on points going into Sunday's final.
